appropriateactOh, man. What don't I do? Books, DVDs, official companion materials for various fandoms, and Google, Google, Google.
For my main (read: Smallville) characters, I have wikis, screencap sites and transcripts bookmarked. I have the entire DVD set at the ready and companion books with maps etc. on hand in case I need them as well. I can even find a Kryptonian glossary in about 5 seconds if required.
For my other characters, it really depends on how often I play them, but I try to make them as realistic to their world as possible. For OCs, that's more or less all in my head, but if I've placed them in a specific real-life city then I will make sure that any streets, shops, etc. I reference actually exist.
Basically, if there's a way to prevent someone from randomly contacting me to tell me I got something wrong, I will attempt to do so.
